Project details
The Victoria Government Department of Energy, Environment and Climate Action (DEECA) is working collaboratively with the Commonwealth Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water (DCCEEW) to develop new approaches to regional planning. Through a multi-institutional response, MBI researchers Rachel Morgain, Brendan Wintle, Andrew Rogers, Stephanie Chen, Joliette Cooper-Booth worked in partnership with Professor Martine Maron and other UQ specialists to develop recommendations on strategic approaches protecting biodiversity values effectively in the face of accelerating development pressures.
What are we interested in?
The MBI is committed to using our expertise to support governments at the state and federal level to improve planning outcomes for nature and community.
The goals of our project
The comprehensive report ‘Strategic Approaches to Ecological compensation and offset’ aims to support the adoption of a nature positive-aligned goal for regions undergoing regional planning, aiming for net-gains through strategic offsetting; aligning with our goals in the Biodiversity Framework under the Convention on Biological Diversity, to which Australia is a Signatory.
Through this work MBI aims to support state and federal governments to develop well-designed regional planning frameworks that will deliver significant societal benefits, including facilitating the energy transition, supporting economic development in regional communities and for Traditional Custodians, and contributing to biodiversity recovery.
